Community bartering systems have been around since the beginning of time and used as an alternative to monetary currency. Bartering has seen a massive resurgence this century due to higher taxes and an uncertain economy.
Bartering or trading services and goods without the use of money has always been popular in rural areas. As an example, farmers and trades people exchange produce for work done on their property and professional service people accept goods in exchange for accounting or legal assistance.
HOW THEY WORK
Local Barter systems usually take one of two forms. Some systems trade through a headquarters, where each member has an account-updated with “debits” and “credits” from trades. Points are assigned to the worth of a barter item instead of a monetary value.
Other systems print and utilise their own currency which is then used by customers of the local towns business. This system of bartering does eliminate the need for a central agency, but it can be problematic in getting all businesses on board with the alternative currency.

Search community bartering online and see what is available by simply entering in the name of your local town or the next largest one to you and the term “community bartering”.

If there isn’t already a local bartering site in your town why not set one up? There are very good resources on “how to set up an online bartering system” available through google search. Once established and promoted, these sites require very little maintenance as each barterer updates their own information.

In December 2014 I left my stressful but highly paid job in the corporate world and returned to Canada from my home in Australia to visit my family and friends. I was exhausted but after a month of hiking with my best friend on the beautiful west coast, and having relaxed cappuccinos with my dad, I was reenergised.
I knew though that I didn’t want to go back to working 12 hour days and was more determined than ever to have less time working and more time living. What to do though? I thought of the old cliché that “it’s not what you earn it’s what you save” my usual response to this was “I like my life and the things I have and I am not ever going to be a coupon and recycling teabags kind of girl”
However in my desperation to not go back to the hard slog, I started to think about getting a simpler job which paid less but would mean I could do a standard 9-5 day. In my mind, finally, saving money meant saving time. When you think about it Money means Time and not the other way around. “If you can save money you can earn yourself time”
When I returned home and was surrounded by our animals I began thinking about saving money in real ways. I googled it and got about 10,000 hits but since I now had the time I started to read the articles and blogs. Most were complete rubbish and obvious or would save so little that it wasn’t worth the changes I would need to make. OK sure they would save a few dollars but they were not going to change my life.
The next day a mortgage broker friend called and this is what truly set me on my new path. After speaking to him I called my bank, long story short, I told them that after 20 years with them I was going to look for a cheaper mortgage. Fifteen minutes later I had negotiated new terms and saved us $4,000 a year. With one phone call! Why had I never done this before? The answer was time I never had any spare time to look for real savings or even the time to really think about it.
Not anymore I was going to find these savings. It took me about 3 weeks of reviewing everything we spent money on, renegotiating contracts on big ticket items and reviewing our budget. I worked out that I could save us $50,000 a year!!! In my world this meant I could now work part time and still have the same quality of life. So I started half- heartedly looking for part time work at my husband’s increasing insistence. This started me thinking though about all the busy people out there who were in the same situation I was, time poor and trapped because of money. As more of a hobby and because I love to write, I started blogging about all the ways I had found to save money and therefore earn time.
I spoke to friends and realised I was on to something as they too started to implement some of the suggestions I had discovered. I continued to write and share my articles and was approached by a company (who shall remain nameless so I don’t get sued) who wanted to put an advert on my site which they would pay me for. Light bulb moment but the problem was I didn’t ethically support this company and I didn’t want to hassle my readers with cheap sales techniques.
However I was actually promoting products through my blogs, ones I used and believed in which were either giving away free samples or were really cheap, I just wasn’t getting paid for it. So I contacted some of those companies and asked if they would pay me to promote their products. Most said no but a couple said yes I could become an associate and they would pay me a small amount (cents not big amounts) if any of my readers went to their site, via a link in mine.
So Busy Buzz Co, my new business was launched. I made a decision though right from the beginning, that I would only promote products which I had used and believed in, no exceptions. I will also be very clear with my readers that if I do promote a product and I am an associate that if they clicked on a link for something free or to get more information I would receive a small stipend.
So far I have only 4 products I get paid for and now about 40 articles which might mention good websites and places to go for free and cheap stuff but I am not being paid for those. I want my readers to trust me and also to be able to use the information for their own benefit, without fear that my site is about flogging products to make a few bucks.
To this end I have set up a Facebook Page/Busy Buzz Co and will write a monthly newsletter on saving real time, money and living more simply so that you too can make choices in your lives to allow you more time for living. I also have a feedback form to encourage readers to ask questions and list things they would like to know about.
I have spent 6 months researching and working through the mess which is now the web to try and find good tips from credible experts and be able to pass them on. Ultimately I want to try and create an online community where readers can share their own tips and have discussions, so this is the goal I am working towards.

While the energy in energy out model is the building block for a healthy body and life how much and what to eat, the type and amount of exercise required is different for each person. My tips are to eat, where possible, whole (unprocessed) foods, ensuring the majority of what you eat is plant based and includes good sources of protein. Sugar not fat is the thing to try and minimise and “low fat” processed foods are usually very high in sugar so avoid processed diet foods.
To maintain energy and keep your blood sugars stabilised eat smaller meals 5 times a day. Take vitamin and other supplements only in addition to healthy eating not to replace a balanced diet. Garcinia Cambogia is a good example of a natural supplement which helps with energy levels and weight loss.
When exercising, choose resistance training over cardio for more effective weight loss and muscle toning. To help avoid skin irritation with alpha-hydroxy acids, it’s best to start with a product with low concentrations of AHA. Also, give your skin a chance to get used to the product. Start out by applying AHA skin products every other day, gradually working up to a daily application. Don’t use too much; follow the instructions on the package.
Beta-Hydroxy Acid (Salicylic Acid)
Salicylic acid exfoliates skin and can improve its texture and color. It also helps with acne.
Many skin care products contain salicylic acid. Some are available over-the-counter and others require a doctor’s prescription. Studies have shown that salicylic acid is less irritating than skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids but has similar results in improving skin texture and color.

Foods to Always Avoid
We all have our treat foods and there is nothing wrong with eating small amounts of pleasure foods. Nutrition experts will tell you though that there are some “foods” which are incredibly detrimental to our health and most of us are unaware of the damages the following food can have:
Not only are these disproportionally high in sugar (causing weight gain and premature skin wrinkling) but many contain trans fats. Trans fats have been banned in many countries now because of their link with cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Recent studies show that while we all try to multi task throughout our day it actually doesn’t save us time and might be bad for our health.
Due to the way our brains are calibrated, taking on 2 or more tasks at the same time will slow both tasks down. Instead it is better to complete things in batches –ie pay all your bills at once, make all your required phone calls at once. This enables you to concentrate on the particular task and get it done more quickly because of the repetitive nature of it.
Making mistakes : seems obvious but a 2010 French study proved that the human brain is incapable of simultaneously doing more than 2 complex tasks because the frontal lobe can only keep track of two complex tasks at any given time. This is why you shouldn’t try and do your taxes while making dinner and speaking on the phone. Not only will all three tasks be slower than if you did them concurrently but there will be significantly more mistakes in all 3 tasks.
Depression: the resulting stress of trying to take on too much at the same time can result in depression according to Professor Koechlin. The frontal lobe of our brains is highly affected by ageing and any neuropsychiatric diseases such as depression and dementia which can make multi- tasking almost impossible. Ignoring limitations can significantly raise frustration and stress levels.
Ageing affects short term memory: multitasking naturally becomes harder as we age but for all of us disengaging from one task to complete another slows both tasks down and interrupts our short term memory. Meaning completing a task and then moving on is much more efficient.
We only have so much “temporary brain space” this is what we use to get tasks done but don’t retain details of. This can severely affect communication and creativity. Once the temporary brain space is full we opt out without realising so checking messages while having a conversation will mean we don’t get the full impact of what is being said to us.
For all these reasons we as humans are not good at multitasking even if we think we are. It can disrupt our focus making us miss things, impede creativity, cause stress, affect memory, increase mistakes and damage our health. So know your limitations and complete one task at a time
